Organised by a volunteer committee comprising representatives from Software NI, Cranmore Consulting, Action for Children, and other leading voices from across the local technology community, the event provides a fun, inclusive, and engaging environment for networking, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Combining friendly competition with fundraising, the quiz celebrates the strength, diversity, and achievements of Northern Ireland’s thriving tech sector while creating opportunities to build new relationships, strengthen existing connections, support a worthy charitable cause, and further reinforce Belfast and Northern Ireland’s reputation as a vibrant, innovative, and collaborative technology hub. To help move things forward, we have already spoken with Haymarket Belfast and have provisionally reserved Tuesday 22nd September as a potential event date. We would be delighted to discuss the concept further and would ideally welcome representation from the Belfast Tech Week team on the organising committee to help shape and grow the event as part of the wider Belfast Tech Week programme.

Belfast's tech scene is buzzing, but if you're Black and in tech (or curious about getting into it), finding your people can feel like searching for a signal in the noise. Black Tech Belfast exists to fix that. Our first edition proved what we suspected: the community is here, and it was hungry for a room like this. So for Belfast Tech Week, we're back. Expect the same energy: People Bingo to get the room talking, a fireside on building tech careers and companies from Northern Ireland, and the launch of our community resource hub, practical templates for breaking into and growing in NI tech, left behind for the next person the way we wish someone had left them for us. Come as you are. Bring a friend, your questions, your CV anxieties, your startup pitch, your "I don't really know what I'm doing yet but I'm interested" energy. All of it belongs here.

Web of Agents – A Tail and Tame of Controlled Autonomy for Physical Devices

What happens when autonomous AI agents leave the screen and start interacting with the physical world? Each agent may be designed to perform a simple task, but when agents communicate, collaborate, and make decisions autonomously, unexpected behaviours can emerge - from unsafe physical actions and privacy breaches to denial of service, manipulation, or agents simply refusing to respond. This is the Web of Agents: a world where intelligent agents operate not in isolation, but as an interconnected ecosystem of physical and digital systems. In this interactive workshop, a team from Queen's University Belfast, Dr Vishal Sharma and Dr Gyan Wickremasinghe, together with Fannya R. Sandjaja, Priyal Gupta, Su Thinzar Thaw, Matteo Melis, and Mark Megarry, will explore the challenges of controlled autonomy for physical devices. Through live demonstrations involving everyday robots, computers, sensors, and connected devices, participants will discover what can happen when autonomous agents interact, and what it takes to keep them safe, trustworthy, and under human control. We will explore: • Web of Agents - how autonomous agents communicate, cooperate, compete, and make decisions across physical and digital environments. • Physical-Layer Security - how the physical communication environment itself can become an attack surface, and how sensing, wireless communication, device identity, and signal-level protections can contribute to secure autonomy. • Controlled Autonomy -designing systems that can act independently while remaining bounded by clearly defined safety, security, and ethical constraints. • Human-in-the-Loop - understanding when humans must intervene, approve, override, or take control of autonomous agents. Rather than simply watching AI make decisions, participants will become part of the system - taking the role of the human controller, security monitor, and safety engineer.

Keerthi Thomas from Digital Catapult will present Enabling Know Your Assets/Agents (KYA) in Trusted Networks, exploring digital identity for IoT devices and autonomous agents, secure peer-to-peer connections, data provenance, decentralised access control and policies for increasingly agentic systems. A third speaker from Northern Ireland’s IoT ecosystem will be announced shortly.
